When Orlan Robert Cool went missing after his ship broke apart off Newfoundland’s frozen coast during a freak storm on Feb. 18, 1942, his death was a double tragedy for his family in Newburg, North Dakota. He became the second son out of four to die. The other two would be dead within two years.
