An ad for an area walk-in clinic caught my eye. The billboard headline raised the question, “Why wait when you can just walk in?” The convenience of the clinic was contrasted with the bother of being sick or injured -- physical aches and pains that “pop up at the most inconvenient times.”

It has now been 35 years since Dr. Dori Carlson and Dr. Mark Helgeson opened Heartland Eye Care in the basement of St. Ansgar's Hospital in Park River. It was a tiny space that allowed one exam room, limited reception seating and a small optical display area.
