Deep freeze grips the Borderland
Joseph Zeleznik, NDSU Extension forester, provided this photo as an example of a frost crack, which goes through the bark and into the wood itself several inches. This is caused when sap and moisture inside quickly freezes and expands under extreme cold. Zeleznik took this photo in Feb. 2023 in Dilworth, Minn.
