Our ROXY Theater turns 90 this year. Since 1936 it’s been an anchor on Langdon’s Main Street.

February 2, 2026 We write as an expression of pride in the members of the Langdon Area School’s Jazz bands. These musicians attended the Myra Jazz Festival in Grand Forks on January 27 and 28, 2026. We could only attend the Middle School performance in person on January 27th. By going online on to Myra Jazz Festival Grand Forks on YouTube, the January 28th Langdon High School performance can be viewed starting at the three hour and 18 minute mark.

Story Hour has been really good these past two weeks. Last week I read “Strictly No Elephants.” The kids really enjoyed it, then we did foil art. The kids really enjoyed that. This week Logan Brown read “Friends Forgive.” We did puzzles, and everyone worked together.

By Sara Goodman Even though I’ve been doing this substitute teaching gig for a few years now, a week and a half ago I subbed at the elementary school for the first time. A week prior to that, I was setting up in the high school board room for a school foundation meeting when Jacy Bata, the elementary school principal, walked in. I’m not sure if she even said “hi” before she asked me what I was doing on Jan. 14. I looked at my calendar and, having an idea of what she was about to ask, told her that unfortunately my calendar was wide open that day. She asked me to sub and then threw the guilt card down when she said that I was her last resort. Several teachers were going to be gone, and she had one spot left to fill. I wanted the details before committing. She said it would be easy: I would have fifth grade and sixth grade all day and one period of kindergarten PE. I asked about recess duty, which is one of the reasons why I had said ‘no’ in the past. She said it would be covered by other teachers. I asked about food because I get hangry easily. She said I could bring snacks and either eat lunch at school or leave. Then she threw in the clincher - I could wear comfy clothes (ie. joggers) since I had PE that day. I was sold.

There’s a lot going on in this world, so we might as well talk about it since it’s too cold to do much of anything else. The photo you see this week is of me in Greenland in 2001. My Army unit was deployed to Thule Air Force Base during 9/11. A lot of things happen up there, and they are all tied to our nation’s security. At that time, it was the only station that could detect ballistic missiles fired over the hemisphere towards our mainland. I’m sure by now there is other technology that could aid in that task, but I guarantee that is a big reason why we would like to keep it for our own. Besides the seriousness of why we were there, it was pretty fun. The sun didn’t go down, all buildings were built on concrete pillars so they wouldn’t sink in, and we had an Air Force dining facility, so we Army guys were in Heaven.

I’m pretty proud of myself. I left the house several times during last week’s cold spell and survived nicely.

By Bob Simmons, CEO, Simmons Multimedia After dinner in Dickinson, N.D., I pointed my new black Chevy ZR2 pickup due west. Next stop - Billings, Mont. For this trip I had rooms pre-booked along the way at Marriott hotels. Growing up with Depression Era parents who understood the value of money, we never stayed in decent hotels. No, my dear ol’ dad and Mumz turned up their noses at those highfalutin Holiday Inns. Dad said only pompous and pretentious people living outside of their means would need to stay in such places.
