The loss of my Mom, Ellen Kulland I’m going to start this week with some thoughts on the passing of my mother, Ellen Kulland. She passed away at the nursing home in Grand Forks on June 23. As I write these words two days after, it still hasn’t sunk in that she’s gone. I haven’t talked a lot about her in this space, as she fiercely protected her privacy, which was very different from my Dad, who was about as public as a person as they come.

50th Annual North Dakota Shrine Bowl All-Star football game coming June 22 This week has been one that several athletes will never forget, as the North Dakota Shrine All-Star football game will be held on June 22 at Mayville State University. This is the 50th year for the event, and it’s a full week of practice, fellowship, and learning all about what the great work the Shriners do, especially running several children’s hospitals across the region. These hospitals have helped kids from all over, including our local area. Mason Romfo, Cole Welsh and Rayce Worley all were selected for the game from Langdon-Edmore-Munich. Romfo, unfortunately, had to bow out of the game due to an injury to his right arm that has also forced him to be just a designated hitter for the Langdon Red Sox American Legion baseball team until he gets things figured out. There are no North Border players in the game this year, but there are a number of them from 9-man teams across the region. The 9-man game will be held at 4:00 p.m. followed by the 11-man game at 7:00. We will have full coverage of this event next week.

Cosley makes All-State in the crazy 2024 State B Golf Tournament The spring sports season came to an end with the State B Golf Tournament in Carrington. Golfers only got to play 21 of the usual 26 holes in the tourney due to heavy rain at the Crossroads Golf Course. After the rain, very high winds made everything look like a dirt tornado, which made things very difficult to get low scores. Grant Cosley of North Border somehow got through the grind and finished in eighth place, which got him on the Class B All-State team. Team scores for both North Border and Langdon-Edmore-Munich were high, which is understandable due to the conditions.
