A bill to provide free meals for North Dakota students failed by two votes in the state Senate on Friday, likely leaving the decision to a statewide vote. House Bill 1624 failed in the Senate 24-22.

Cavalier County’s grant program aims to boost child care availability

North Dakota’s Childcare Aware released its 2026 county-level data earlier this month, highlighting a significant need for child care services in Cavalier County. According to Shannon Duerr, executive director of the Cavalier County Job Development Authority, the county has 317 children ages 0-5, with 56% living in households where all parents are in the workforce. Among children ages 6-12, 82% have all parents working.

BISMARCK, N.D. - The North Dakota Department of Public Instruction will be seeking applications from organizations interested in operating North Dakota’s Summer Food Service Program in April. The program provides free meals for children when school is not in session.

Greetings from the residents and staff of PNC! It’s that time again to tell you about one of our residents that “ROCKS!” Grab your favorite cup of coffee or tea, and pick a cozy spot to sit as you read all about Clair Longtin. Clair was born at home on a farm just outside of Walhalla to Henry and May Longtin. Henry and May had a total of ten children: Orise, Cyril, Paul, Birdella, Elmer, Wayne, Priscilla, Lonnie, Clair, and Martha. Since Clair was close to being the “baby” of the family, many of his siblings were already out of the house before he really got to know them. The brother he spent the most time with as a kid was his brother, Lonnie.

National Weather Service releases flood outlook

The National Weather Service office in Grand Forks released its first spring flood outlook of the season. The report indicates flooding threats are overall low, with possible minor flooding in Grand Forks, Drayton, and Pembina; and potentially moderate in Hallock and Oslo. Precipitation amounts over the next few weeks and the speed of the snowmelt will be major factors.
