A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. with visitation one hour prior on June 11, 2026, at St. George Catholic Church in Copperstown, N.D., for Evelyn Mae Chaput, 91, a longtime resident of Cooperstown, who passed away peacefully surrounded by family at St. Catherine South in Fargo on March 8, 2026.
Evelyn was born Nov. 23, 1934, in Winner, S.D., to Arthur and Mae (Long) Ekberg. Evelyn graduated from Osnabrock High School and continued her education at Mayville State, receiving her teaching certificate. She taught for three years in a country school. Evelyn also provided in-home day care and handled bookwork for the local elevator.
Evelyn married Delenore Chaput on June 20, 1956, at St. Alphonsus Church in Langdon, N.D. They lived in Rock Lake, N.D., for five years beican moving to Cooperstown. Evelyn was actively involved in the Cooperstown community as a member of St. George Catholic Church, St. Anne’s Circle, Meals on Wheels, a volunteer hairdresser at the nursing home and helping with her daughter’s home day care. Evelyn enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, golfing, bowling, camping, fishing, playing games - especially Trouble and pinochle, collecting owls and attending sporting events of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Evelyn enjoyed traveling and spent 25 years wintering in south Texas.
Evelyn moved to St. Catherine South in February 2024, where she made many new friends and enjoyed activities, cards and many visits with family and friends. Evelyn is survived by her husband, Delenore, of Fargo, N.D.; daughters Kim (Jerry) Hook of Edinburg, Texas, and Lisa (Pete) Nordtvedt of West Fargo, N.D.; grandchildren: Jennifer (Aaron) Sykes, Marc (Kylie) Haaland, Desiree (Josh) Fuxa, Paul (Kendra) Nordtvedt, Ashley (Gary) Mueller, Cory (Nicole) Chaput, CynDee (Richard) Smith and Nic Nordtvedt; step-grandchildren Michelle Hook and Jason Hook; 15 great-grandchildren (one more on the way); three step-great-grandchildren; one greatgreat-grandchild; five step-greatgreat- grandchildren; sisters-in-law MaryLou (Gary) Schissler and Darlene (Bill) Brooks; brothers-in-law: Glenn Hiltner, David (Joyce) Chaput and Joe (Tina) Chaput; and several nieces and nephews.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; daughter Susan; son Kurtis; daughter-in-law Tammy; great-granddaughter Alison; her sisters: Laverne, Shirley and Delores; her brothers: Eugene, Leonard and Arnold; Delenore’s parents, Ed and Fern Chaput; and sisters- in-law Sister Donna Jean Chaput and EdiAnn Otto.
