Lady Cards one game away from another State B tournament appearance

The Langdon-Munich Cardinals won their first two games at the Region 2B Girls Basketball Tournament held in Larimore Feb. 23-26. The Lady Cards won in the first round, 54-42, over Park River-Fordville-Lankin then gave Hatton-Northwood just their second loss of the season, beating the Thunder 59-47. Langdon-Munich was in the championship game against Benson County on Feb. 26, and depending on how they did in that game, they are either going to the State B Tournament in Minot March 5-7 with a win or will play in a state-qualifying game on Feb. 28 at 7:00p.m. at Mayville State University. The Cardinals are trying for their eighth appearance as a Langdon-Munich girls basketball coop after they took fifth place at state last year.

Eagles lose to M-M for second time to end regular season at 10-9

The North Border Eagles had their last game of the regular season at home versus fourth-ranked Midway-Minto on Feb. 19. The Mustangs blew the game open in the second half and beat the Eagles for the second time this season, 72-61. North Border is now 10-9 on the year and will be the third seed in the District 3 Boys Basketball Tournament to be held in Larimore, Feb. 27-March 2. It appears they will play Larimore in a first-round game on Feb. 27 at 7:30p.m. A complete bracket for the District 3 tourney can be found in this week's paper. Cardinals lose at Grafton in last tune before postseason

The Langdon-Munich Cardinals played one last game to complete their regular season schedule - at Grafton on Feb. 20. The Cards stayed with the Spoilers in the first half, but Grafton pulled away for the win, 74-51. Langdon- Munich will now take a 9-10 record to the District 4 Boys Basketball Tournament, which will be held at the Langdon High School gym, Feb. 27-March 2. They are the third seed in the tourney and will play sixth-seeded North Prairie in the opening round at 7:30p.m. on Feb. 27. A complete bracket of the tournament can be found in this week's paper.

Blades Junior Gold boys, 19U girls finish up regular season hockey with Senior Day

The Langdon Blades boys and girls hockey teams finished up their regular season schedules with home games on Feb. 21. The Junior Gold boys got a 5-3 win over Northwood and also won a big game at Grand Forks, 4-2, two nights before on Feb. 19. The girls skated to a 4 all tie with Bottineau- Rugby on Feb. 21. Both teams will now be getting ready for respective state tournaments. Both tourneys will be in Watford City, with the boys playing March 5-7 and the girls, March 6-8. The Junior Gold team is locked in as the second seed behind Grand Forks, while the girls were currently fourth. Brackets for each tournament were yet to be released at press time due to some league games yet to be played the weekend of Feb. 27-28. Feb. 21 was also Senior Day for both teams. McKenzie Regner and Kenadee Cluchie were recognized on the girls side, while for boys, seniors Keaton Ullyott, Ben Berg, Carter Lien and Jax Johnson were honored, along with their parents.

North Dakota spreads wealth to help communities celebrate America’s 250th birthday

Events, concerts, community initiatives and educational opportunities will headline a year of celebration in North Dakota for the 250th birthday of the United States. The ND250 Commission has awarded about $142,000 through two rounds of its Community Initiatives Grant program for events and projects around the state, said Melissa Klocke-Joyce, program coordinator.

Grizzly girls wrap season with strong State showing

This past weekend, the Grizzly girls wrestling team traveled to Fargo for the North Dakota State Wrestling Tournament, and what a weekend it was for our team. We had seven individual qualifiers compete at state, and several girls brought home top finishes.

Lady Cards come up just short at District 4 Girls Basketball Tournament in Maddock

L-M down 14-0 to Benson County in title game, just misses comeback; Haaven, Schaefer on All-District team The Langdon-Munich Cardinals girls basketball team came in as the second seed in the District 4 Tournament, which was held in Maddock, Feb. 13-16. The Lady Cards won their first two games, beating New Rockford- Sheyenne 43-36 in the opening round then defeating North Prairie 55-40 in the semifinals. The two wins put the Lady Cards in the title game against defending State B Champion Benson County. Down 14 points early, the Cardinals lost in the title game 53-51. After the tourney, the Cards now have a record of 15-7 and advance to the Region 2B Tournament in Larimore, where they will play Park River-Fordville-Lankin in the opening round at 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 23. Freshman Hilary Haaven and eighth grader Ary Schaefer made the All-District 4 team. Aubrey Kenner of Benson County was named District 4 Senior Athlete of the Year, while her dad, Bryan Kenner, was honored with District 4 Coach of the Year.

The heart of Tournament Time has arrived The busiest and arguably the most fun point of Tournament Time is here. We just got through district girls basketball, regional wrestling, and are now in the midst of several winter tournaments. It’s a very busy time for sports pages here at The Borderland Press, and you can look forward to coverage of state wrestling, regional girls basketball, and district boys hoops in the weeks ahead. We have a lot to visit with you about this week, so let’s get right to it.

Cards boys take tough loss at NR-S, get huge win over North Star

The Langdon-Munich Cardinals boys basketball team played their last District 4 games of the regular season when they played at New Rockford- Sheyenne on Feb. 12 then hosted the North Star Bearcats on Feb. 17. The Cards lost a defensive battle to the Rockets 50-42, but they got one of their biggest wins of the season over North Star, 59-55. The Cardinals record is now an even 9-9 on the year, as they play their last game before the postseason at Grafton on Feb. 20. The Langdon Area High School gym will be the site of the District 4 Boys Basketball Tournament to be held Feb. 27-March 2. Cardinals senior players Tanner McDonald and Levi Swanson and senior statisticians Mya Johnson and Nora Lorenz were all honored with their parents for Senior Night, which was held before the Bearcats game.
