Men's and women's softball has been almost non-existent for our area the last several years, so it was great to see two amateur tourneys held recently, the Legacy Men's Tournament at Edgar Westphal Field in Munich, featuring teams from Langdon, Munich and Edmore on Aug. 7, and a 1st Annual Co-ed Softball Tourney held at the diamonds in Langdon on Aug. 9.

After having their first meet of the year in Cando on Aug. 8, the Langdon-Munich Cardinals hosted a meet at their home course on Aug. 11. It was a chilly start then became windy with sprinkles, and scores from the tourney reflected that. There were also a lot of first time golfers competing. The Lady Cards Nadia Lewis made the top 10 with a score of 100.

The good time, late summer baseball news continues Last week, we told you about a Langdon 9U Cal Ripken baseball team that had a deep run in a North Dakota AAA Tournament in Wahpeton. Well, it turns out that there is much more news to report on the area Cal Ripken and Babe Ruth baseball front. The Fargo 12U All Stars made it to the Midwest Regional Final, one step away from the World Series, last week. You can find a story about Caleb Mikkelsen, a young man who has many, many ties to our readership area, who was one of the members of the team. Also, the West Fargo Rattlers are in the Cal Ripken 12U World Series, going on in Branson Missouri as these words were typed. Jager Gellner and Beckman Lundeby, two gentlemen with tons of relations in the area, are playing on that team. They are coached by Ryan Gellner (Yes, THAT Ryan Gellner), and Dustin Lundeby. We plan on having a story on how the team did in Branson next week. They were currently still alive in the tourney at press time. It’s just a blast to hear about and follow the action of all these talented young athletes.

The Little League World Series is going on in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, through Aug. 17. One team that nearly made their second-ever appearance at the series was the Fargo 12U All Stars. They had a great season but came up one game short of their dream of making it to the show. They still had a fantastic season, finishing with a sparkling record of 35-8 and winning tournaments in Sioux Falls, S.D., Moorhead, Minn., and Bismarck before winning the state title to represent Team North Dakota at the Little League Midwest Regional held in Whitestown, Indiana, Aug. 1-8. There, they got wins over Minnesota 10-4, Wisconsin 3-2, and South Dakota 5-4 to make the championship game against Sioux Falls, where a couple of early errors cost them in a 6-0 loss.
