Attempting to transition into spring sports This week is supposed to be the week that spring sports will get going outdoors. All three of our boys baseball and girls softball teams are hoping to get underway with games this week, but the weather looks stubborn for the first couple of days, anyway. While we wait for spring activities to get going, we have been just out at the Ponderosa in Williston with Lovely Lisa, continuing to get the ranch cleaned up and still in search of the septic tank (although, getting really warm now!). There are and always will be things to do out west, although maybe not as critical as a couple of years ago.

The wild ride of the winter sports season has come to an end As we come to you this week, we are still catching our breath after the end of the winter sports season. What a couple of months it was (although sometimes it seemed like a couple of years), and lots of good times were had. We had two teams we cover in this paper make state tournaments, the Langdon-Munich Lady Cards taking fifth place in the State B Girls Basketball Tournament in Jamestown and recently the North Border Eagles finishing seventh at the State Boys B Tourney in Minot. Of course, both teams would have liked to bring home state titles, but both did end their seasons with wins, which was great to see.

North Border wins first regional title since 2007 to advance to the Big Dance in Minot

Body
By Jake Kulland, Sports Editor It had been a long journey for the North Border Eagles boys basketball team after their last State Class B Boys Basketball Tournament appearance in 2007. After some near misses the last couple of seasons, North Border finally got over the hump and won the Region 2 Class B Boys Basketball Tournament held in Devils Lake March 10-13. The Eagles beat MPCG 67-47, defeated Midway-Minto 53-46 in the semifinals, then won 5546 over New Rockford-Sheyenne for the title. NB took a 24-1 record into the State B tourney, which is being held in Minot at the MSU-Dome March 20-22. They played defending state champion Westhope-Newburg in the first round on March 20.

North Border Eagles make third straight to the State B; First time since 2007 It’s very exciting times this week, as the North Border Eagles have made the State B Boys Basketball Tournament for the first time since 2007. This somewhat old news now but still very worthy of being mentioned in this space here. As you read these words, the Eagles are in the State B tourney and played defending champion Westhope-Newburg in the first round. No matter what the outcome for the Eagles at the state tourney, just seeing them in the tournament is miraculous. They had to overcome a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter of a region qualifying game over North Star, or we wouldn’t be even talking about this. That win over the Bearcats seemed to jump start the team; they played very well at the Region 2 Class B Tournament to get to Minot for the B. This tournament appearance is also for the Eagles teams that showed so much promise and came so close but did not make it the Big Dance the last couple of years. Let’s hope that everyone that is at the tournament (which has filled at least two sections of the MSU-Dome!), will have a great time, and make some great memories no matter of the outcome. Here’s hoping our Eagles bring back the large hardware.
